An adult is a person or animal who has attained complete growth.The biological definition of the word means an animal reaching sexual maturity, which makes it capable of reproduction. Adults are a social concept and also a legal notion in the human world. Legal adults and not "minors" (also known as non-adults), is someone who is over the age of majority and is thus considered to be independent, responsible as well as autonomous. The term "major" is a term used to define these individuals. The age for achieving legal adulthood is 18, although definition may vary by the legal rights of the country, and psychological development.

In the lifespan of an individual, adulthood refers to the age when a person has achieved full physical and intellectual maturity. Commonly, adulthood begins around age 21, or 20. Following middle age (starting at around 40) is the time to reach old age (around the age of 60). The adulthood process is split into three stages that are: early adulthood (18-mid-30s) and mid-30s to mid-60s and late adulthood mid-60s until the time of death. When we reach the early stage of adulthood (between 20-40) the bodies of our children have reached full maturation although our weight and height could increase slightly. During young adulthood we reach the highest level of physical capabilities.
